Max is survived by his wife Nina, their two daughters Lisa Harris Haney and her husband Philip Haney, and Lynn Harris Hill and her husband Garner Hill. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Reese Haney, Carter Haney, George Dawson, Campbell Bouldin, and (soon to come) Garner Bouldin.

Max and Nina moved to Memphis in 1957. After several moves, they returned to Memphis, where they raised their daughters. Max worked at the Commercial Appeal as the Executive Advertising Sales Manager, retiring on September 30, 1999, after 32 years. Max lived a simple and quiet life. He loved his Kentucky Wildcat Basketball and rarely missed watching a game. He preferred to build, fix, and do things himself. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, and traveling. Max was a member of the Raleigh Church of Christ and later a member of the Germantown Church of Christ.
