Captain Robert Glynn Nanney, 72, died on November 20, 2025, in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn Mosson Nanney, of 33 years, and his brother James S. Nanney and two nephews, John and Bradley Nanney. His brother, Thomas Nanney, and parents, LTC James and Iris Nanney predeceased him.Captain Nanney graduated in 1971 from Fulton High School, Fulton KY; he was an honors graduate, Cum Laude of Vanderbilt University receiving his Bachler of Arts in History on a full US Navy ROTC scholarship. In 1975 he received the Nashville Navy League’s Outstanding Midshipman award; he received a master’s degree in Financial Management from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey CA;
and is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Executive Leadership Program.Commissioned Ensign, USN Supply Corps in 1975.Captain Nanney’s military career spanned 29 years of honorable service. He was a Surface Warfare (SC) Officer. Afloat tours include USS SARSFIELD, Destroyer (DD837), including Mediterranean deployments, USS MARS Fleet Support Ship (AFS1), receiving the Meritorious Unit Commendation, USNS SPICA (T-AFS) Fleet Support as Officer in Charge and Supply officer of the military detachment aboard. He completed three deployments to the Arabian Gulf.Captain Nanney’s assignments ashore include Navy Supply Corps School, Athens Georgia, Navy Accounting and Finance Center, Washington DC; Staff of The Fleet Air Mediterranean Systems Command, Naples Italy, Staff of The Naval Supply Systems Command, Mechanicsburg, PA, Office of the Supply Corps Personnel/BUPERS, Millington, TN, Navy Fleet Material Support Office, Mechanicsburg PA,
Naval Supply Systems Command HQ as SUP 41 in charge of rules and tools for Navy’s supply chain Management, Director of Supply Personnel, Millington, TN. He was the first Chief of Staff Naval Supply Systems Command HQ, Mechanicsburg, PA. In addition, he was the 31st Commanding Officer Fleet Industrial Supply Officer, Pearl Harbor. Hawaii.Captain Nanney received numerous decorations and commendations during his naval service including 4 Meritorious Service Medals, 3 Navy Commendation Medals, Sea Service, and Navy Achievement awards.After the military, Captain Nanney worked as a consultant for CACI, a Department of Defense consulting firm out of Ashburn VA, followed by a position as VP of Logistics for Amtrak, in Philadelphia PA.
After leaving Amtrak, his wife Lynn, their dog Peaches, and cat Stella retired in Mechanicsburg, PA until last October when they moved back to Lynn’s hometown of Northern VA.Visitation and a celebration of life will be at the Demaine Funeral Home at 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151 from 10:00-12:00 with a brief prayer service at 11:30. Refreshments will be served during the visitation. His cremains will be interred at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Wounded Warriors Project or Speranza Animal Rescue 1216 Brandt Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
